Province CN
Savigliano, CN
A town on the Cuneo plain roughly 50 kilometres south of Turin, with a long industrial record in rolling stock: the works that became Fiat Ferroviaria and now Alstom still build trains here. The centre is a compact arcaded grid around one large square, and the town holds Piedmont's main railway museum.
Sights
- Piazza Santarosa, the arcaded main square with a 13th-century civic tower
- The triumphal arch of 1585, raised for the marriage of Charles Emmanuel I to Catherine of Austria
- Palazzo Taffini d'Acceglio, a noble palace with a hall frescoed after 1637, now home to the Muses academy of aromatic essences
- Museo Ferroviario Piemontese, with more than seventy restored locomotives and carriages
- Teatro Milanollo of 1834 to 1836, neoclassical, with an oval auditorium
- Museo Civico Antonino Olmo and the Gipsoteca Davide Calandra, in a former Franciscan convent
Things to do
- Give the railway museum real time, it is the reason many people come
- Walk the arcades of the centre, which connect most of the sights under cover
- Visit the Muses garden and essence workshops as an alternative to church-visiting
