Limone Piemonte, CN

A town at around 1,000 metres in the Vermenagna valley in the Maritime Alps, about 20 kilometres south of Cuneo and close to the French border at the Colle di Tenda. Skiing arrived with the railway in the 1890s, making it one of Italy's oldest ski resorts, and it kept a stone-built historic centre rather than a purpose-built one. It is roughly an hour from the Ligurian coast by road.

Sights

  • Chiesa di San Pietro in Vincoli, of Romanesque and Gothic phases, dated by carvings of 1363 and 1447, with an 11th-century bell tower and a 15th-century Deposition over the portal
  • The historic centre of stone houses and slate roofs along narrow lanes, unusual for an Italian ski resort
  • Riserva Bianca, the ski area, around 80 kilometres of pistes across three linked sectors
  • Colle di Tenda and its 19th-century fortifications above the town, on the old road to Nice

Things to do

  • Ski or ride the Riserva Bianca in winter, or walk and mountain bike its trails in summer
  • Ride the Cuneo to Ventimiglia railway, an engineered mountain line towards the sea
  • Walk sections of the Alta Via del Sale on the old military road towards the Ligurian ridge
