Province TO
Giaveno, TO
A town of the Val Sangone about 30 kilometres west of Turin, where the valley opens onto the plain. It was ruled for centuries by the abbey of San Michele della Chiusa, which fortified it in 1347, and it is now best known in Piedmont as a porcini mushroom centre.
Sights
- The abbey citadel, fortified in 1347 with high walls and five round towers, still readable in the street plan
- Santuario della Madonna del Bussone, on the hillside above the town
- The Percorso delle Meridiane, a short historic-centre route past 18th and 19th-century sundials
- The Percorso delle Fontane, a 1.3 kilometre urban walk linking the town's fountains
Things to do
- Buy and eat porcini in season, the town's whole identity turns on them
- Walk the Piana di Villa loop, about five kilometres and flat, from the Palasport
- Follow the Itinerari della Resistenza, marked routes through the town and the Val Sangone covering the wartime partisan history
