Province CN
Fossano, CN
A town in the Cuneo plain, founded as a commune in 1236 and dominated by a large square castle built by the Acaja branch of the Savoy in the early 14th century. Its long arcaded main street and the castle give it more presence than most towns of its size on this plain.
Sights
- Castello degli Acaja, begun in 1314 and finished in 1332, square with four corner towers, later a ducal residence and now a civic and library venue
- Cattedrale di Santa Maria e San Giovenale, rebuilt at the end of the 18th century in neoclassical style
- Chiesa della Santissima Trinita, an 18th-century church by the local architect Francesco Gallo
- Palazzo del Comandante, a 17th-century baroque palace
- The via Roma porticoes, the arcaded spine of the old town and the setting for the palio processions
Things to do
- Walk the full length of the arcaded via Roma and out to the castle
- See the castle courtyard, a late 15th-century design
- Use Fossano as a quiet base between Cuneo, Bra and the Langhe
