Province TO
Chivasso, TO
A town on the Po northeast of Turin, of probable Roman origin and now a major rail junction where the Turin lines to Milan, Aosta and Casale meet. It is a working town rather than a resort, with a good late Gothic cathedral facade and a hazelnut biscuit that carries its name.
Sights
- Duomo di Chivasso, a 15th-century collegiate church with a facade decorated in terracotta statuary
- Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli, 18th century, partly to a design by Bernardo Antonio Vittone
- The Torre Ottagonale, the surviving octagonal tower of the vanished Montferrat castle
- Palazzo Santa Chiara, a former convent complex used as a civic and cultural venue
Things to do
- Buy nocciolini di Chivasso, tiny meringue biscuits made with Piedmont IGP hazelnuts, from a town pasticceria
- Walk or cycle the Po riverside and the canal path towards Turin
- Use the town as a rail base for day trips towards the Aosta valley or Casale
