Province CN
Barolo, CN
A village of roughly 700 people in the Langhe, surrounded by the Nebbiolo vineyards that give the wine its name. The Falletti castle in the centre holds a wine museum and the regional wine library, so it is one of the few Langhe villages where you can understand the wine without booking a private cellar visit. It sits inside the UNESCO-listed vineyard landscape.
Sights
- Castello Falletti, the medieval castle owned by the Falletti family from the 13th century, whose line ended with Marchesa Giulia Colbert in 1864
- WiMu, the wine museum inside the castle, 25 rooms over five floors, designed by Francois Confino
- Enoteca Regionale del Barolo, the regional wine library in the castle's old cellars, where the museum visit ends
- Museo dei Cavatappi, a small private museum of historic corkscrews
- Chiesa di San Donato, the parish church on the main square
Things to do
- Taste comparatively at the Enoteca rather than committing to one estate
- Walk the marked vineyard paths out towards La Morra and Novello
- Order tajarin or brasato al Barolo in the village
- Buy from a single producer only after the enoteca has shown you the differences between communes
Annual events
August
Le notti del vino
An evening tasting event, part of a wider Piedmont summer initiative held in several wine towns.
September
Festa del vino
Village wine festival with tastings in the streets.
When to visit
Late September to early November, for harvest, autumn colour in the vines and the truffle season. May is a quieter alternative.
