Province TO

Bardonecchia, TO

The westernmost comune in Italy, at about 1,300 metres in the upper Susa valley where four side valleys meet, 90 kilometres from Turin. It grew from a village into a town with the Frejus rail tunnel and is now a ski resort and the Italian portal of both the Frejus road and rail tunnels. It hosted the snowboarding events of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Sights

  • Borgo Vecchio, the original village above the station, of stone houses and narrow streets
  • Chiesa di Sant'Ippolito, the parish church of the old village, with a 15th-century choir brought from Novalesa Abbey
  • Museo Civico Etnografico, local tools, costumes and furnishings in the former town hall
  • Tur d'Amun, a 14th-century tower, part of one of the more significant early medieval complexes in the Susa valley
  • Forte Bramafam, a 19th-century Alpine fortification above the town, restored by volunteers

Things to do

  • Ski or snowboard the four linked areas in winter
  • Walk to Rochemolles or up the Valle Stretta in summer
  • Take the train through the Frejus tunnel for the crossing itself
