Venue: Various locations. Address: Various locations, Via Maurizio Farina 57, Rivarolo Canavese, TO Nigerian artworks from the Giachetti Arte collection. The exhibition Toward Modernity. From ritual art to figurative art in Nigeria is a journey to discover spirits, myths and legends from the vast and multiethnic traditional Nigerian culture, up to the threshold of modernity with the artworks of a true pioneer artist of modern art in Africa and others by internationally recognized contemporary Nigerian artists. The exhibition begins with the ancient Nok culture, dating back more than 2000 years, continuing with objects belonging to different ethnic groups, whose production is estimated to have begun around 1400. The core of the first part of the exhibition is made up of wooden Yoruba statues and masks, created for religious or commemorative functions, together with Ife bronze heads, Benin bronzes and everyday objects. Continuing on, the exhibition opens to figurative art with a series of works by Twins Seven Seven (1944-2011), a pioneer artist of Nigerian decorative art, whose stage name honors the fact that he was the only surviving child of seven sets of twins.
