It is the name of that force that overturns perfectly ordered plans, rules, habits; that force that, in eros, has irresistible power and absolute freedom. «Free was she born and free shall she die», says the woman who embodies it in this opera. What happens when fate pushes her in front of a brigadier who seems her exact opposite, the ideal type of the “good boy”? Under the Spanish sky unfolds a universal story, a blinding conflict between those passions that we see come to life daily — and sometimes tragically — before our eyes. Giving them expression is the music of Georges Bizet, charged with energy like a spring ready to snap. Greeted coolly at the first performances in 1875, Carmen soon enjoyed enormous popular success and the admiration of composers such as Brahms, Čajkovskij and Wagner — and of Nietzsche, who devoted revealing pages to it after hearing it in 1888 in Turin. In Turin it returns with a first-rate cast, which sees the debut at the Regio of Maria Kataeva as Carmen, and many welcome returns: Piero P
