Address: piazza Gambarina 1 - 15121 Alessandria The Ethnographic Museum “C’era una Volta” in Alessandria is located inside the “Gambarina Vecchia”, a barracks dating back to the eighteenth century. On the ground floor, an evocative route unfolds which, taking advantage of the bay structure of the former stables, recreates the main moments of public and private life in peasant society between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The various “Windows on the past” recreate the moment of birth, games, school, the kitchen, the bedroom, the trousseau room and the wedding event. A special section is dedicated to the two World Wars with objects, weapons and furnishings coming largely from the war 1915-1918. The section dedicated to work presents tools and furnishings belonging to the various craft workshops (shoemaker, blacksmith, carpenter) and to the various phases of agricultural production. On the upper floor it is possible to admire the layout of a classroom from the thirties and the library containing books dating back to the early nineteenth century. Completing the ethnographic section are a vast collection of dolls and toys from various eras and the display cases that exhibit
