Cuneo celebrates the Fiera del Marrone in October, dedicated to chestnuts and the autumn flavours of the Cuneo valleys. Cuneo, the capital of the Granda, the largest province in Piedmont at the foot of the Alps, dedicates a major fair to chestnuts that fills the historic centre with stalls and food stands. The marrone, the finest chestnut from the Cuneo valleys, is the star of the festival, and the streets fill with the smell of roasted chestnuts, cooked in large perforated pans and served hot to visitors. The stands offer chestnut-based sweets, from marron glace to cakes, together with mountain cheeses, cured meats, honey and the great products of the area, such as hazelnuts and wines from the nearby Langhe. The fair combines food and wine with craft markets, workshops, meetings on mountain products, live music and activities for families, and attracts visitors from across the province. Cuneo preserves an elegant historic centre, with the long porticoed Via Roma, Piazza Galimberti and the buildings that tell the story of the city, laid out on a plateau between two rivers at the foot of the Maritime Alps.
