Organizer: Teatro Regio Torino Cavalleria rusticana | Pietro Mascagni Performance paired with Pagliacci A dazzling one-act work, a journey into the psyche of a betrayed woman, consumed by anger and a sense of abandonment, feelings that awaken ancient bloodthirsty codes of honor. If Verga’s novella of the same name has over time shaped the imagination of all Sicilian jealousy dramas, this is also thanks to the music of Pietro Mascagni: straightforward, immediate, rough, with a special brilliance in evoking the landscape of the small town of Vizzini and a sudden violence in the eruption of passions. The emotional impact on listeners has lasted ever since, when, to put it in Sciascia’s words, «the cry “hanno ammazzato cumpari Turiddu” had for the first time sent a shiver down the spine of opera lovers». Created in 1890 as a candidate for a competition run by the Sonzogno publishing house, Cavalleria rusticana achieved huge success: its author, a newcomer, became famous instantly and the score aroused the interest of musicians such as Gustav Mahler.
