54° Festa del toumin del Mel

Among the unspoiled pastures of the Val Varaita, the village of Melle proudly hosts the Festa del Toumin del Mel, an event that celebrates one of the oldest and most distinctive cheeses of the Cuneo Alps. Produced with whole cow’s milk, toumin is a small cheese with a soft texture, fragrant, wrapped in a thin rind and with a sweet, milky flavour, which can become more pronounced with aging. During the festival, the village streets come alive with tasting stalls, showcooking, guided tastings, workshops for adults and children, while the producers tell the story of this Slow Food presidium. Toumin is enjoyed on its own, with honey and rustic bread, but also in hot dishes such as gnocchi, polenta or crespelle. There is no shortage of live music, photographic exhibitions, markets and visits to barns and dairy plants. A festival that smells of hay, wood and fresh milk, and that tells the deep intertwining of landscape, tradition and alpine flavours.
