It was autumn 1861, while Italy celebrated its newly born political unity amid a thousand social tensions, a peaceful and noisy “army” set out from Turin. They were not soldiers but boys, led by a 46-year-old priest with a smile on his lips and a far-sighted gaze. This year marks the 165 years of that memorable autumn walk, an event which, reread today, appears not only as an outing, but as a POWERFUL EDUCATIONAL MANIFESTO. The autumn walks were a classic of the Valdocco oratory, but the one of 1861 had a special flavor. Imagine the scene: a column of boys crossing the Monferrato countryside preceded by the oratory band. Why remember that event today? Because that walk encapsulates the essence of the Preventive System; in those days of walking, the barriers between educator and pupil fell.
